AmesMUG: How to clean a hard drive?

If you want to make sure all the data on the drive is destroyed, you
can use the original system cd to wipe the hard disk. Insert the
disk and hold the C key until it starts booting from the CD. Find
the program Disk Setup and reformat the disk with the option of Zero
all data or write zeros. This will take a while to complete. Once
it's reformatted, you can install the operating system and it should
be ready to go. These steps are a very brief overview, since I don't
have an older machine to recall the exact steps.
